As moms, wives, and professionals, we often are so busy with the responsibilities of the many hats we wear that we often put our needs last on our “to do list.” Before our day is over, we don’t have the time or energy to focus on ourselves. However, ladies, our health is one thing that we must make time for and focus on every day. Because let’s face it, without us, our families would be helpless 🙂 Well, maybe not, but it sure seems that way at my house.
Honestly, in order for us to be the best version of ourselves, we must be healthy. Now, I am not talking about going to the gym seven days a week or becoming vegan. By the way, if you go to the gym seven days a week, you’re amazing. If eating vegan is your thing, that’s wonderful. My best friend is vegan, and I love many of her vegan recipes.
My point is that we can make some simple changes to our lifestyle that can improve our health. These simple changes can get us on track to a healthier lifestyle and motivate us to make even more changes in the future.
These simple changes can be done at your own pace. I actually recommend you start out slowly with these changes so that you will be more successful in forming new healthy habits. Habits that will not only improve your health but also your life!
Here are five simple changes that can get you on track to a healthier lifestyle.

1. Get Moving
We all know how important exercise is to our health. According to the American Heart Association, we need 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. This breaks down to about 22 minutes a day or 30 minutes five days per week. You can even receive the same benefits with breaking down your exercise into two or three segments of 10 to 15 minutes per day.
If you really make your health a priority, you can find the extra time needed to squeeze in some form of exercise into your day. Go for a walk around your neighborhood or on a bike ride with your kids. Play a game of tag or basketball with your kids. Play Let’s Dance on the Wii. Wake up before everyone else and get in your 30 minutes of exercise.
Whether you exercise with your kids or by yourself, just get moving. Make this time a priority in your daily schedule.
2. Drink More Water
Water is important to our health in many ways. First of all, our body is made up of about 60% water. Water helps the body digest food, remove waste from cells, and regulate body temperature. Drinking water and staying hydrated also can improve brain function, energy levels, relieve headaches, and even help with weight loss.
Many health experts recommend drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day. Now, drinking that many glasses of water a day may seem like a challenge to you, but here are a few tips that can help you get your 8 glasses in every day.
– Carry a refillable water bottle with you everywhere you go
– Add a slice of lemon to your water
– Use a fruit infuser water bottle to enhance the taste of your water
– Drink a glass of water before every meal
– Use a water tracker to record how much water you are drinking
Drinking more water every day can improve your health in many ways. Try setting a goal that motivates you to drink one extra glass of water every day until you reach the recommended 8 glasses. Once you reach the 8 glasses per day, you will notice a difference in how you feel and your energy level.
3. Change One Eating Habit
You might be wondering what I mean by change one eating habit. Well, try to cut out one unhealthy food that you eat or try to eat a healthy food that you’re not eating enough of. For instance, try cutting out processed food and eat only whole foods. You can also try to eat more fruits or vegetables. For example, try eating one large salad a day and eat fruits and vegetables as snacks.
Rather than trying to change every bad eating habit that you have, try sticking with changing only one at a time. Once you have conquered changing one eating habit, you can move on to changing another. By doing this, you will be more successful in changing your eating habits for good and eating an overall healthy diet.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Research shows that we should get between 7-8 hours of sleep every night. According to studies, sleep helps the body manage hunger levels, maintain the immune system, retain memory, and decrease the risk of chronic health conditions. The truth is that getting enough sleep is important to our health.
Now if you have babies at home, I totally understand that getting enough sleep seems impossible. However, try to squeeze in as much sleep as you can. Sleep when your baby is napping or go to bed when your baby goes to bed. Do what you can and believe me when I say that this time will pass. One day your baby will sleep through the night.
Here are some great tips on getting enough sleep.
– Have a relaxing bedtime routine to wind down your mind and body
– Try not to have any caffeine at least 4 hours before bed
– Exercise during the day
– Make sure your room is dark and your bed is comfortable
Getting enough sleep is important to our health. Try to create a bedtime routine this week. Go to bed at the same time every night and try to wake up at the same time every morning. Developing this routine will help you get on track to getting the sleep you need to stay healthy.
5. Schedule Quiet Time
Some of you may be thinking, “Quiet time is impossible at my house”. I totally understand. I am lucky if I can go to the bathroom in peace at my house without being interrupted by someone who needs something. However, this quiet time is crucial for our sanity and soul. Try to find some quiet time during the day, even if it’s only 15 minutes, to refuel and refresh your mind and soul.
For myself, I choose to wake up before everyone else to get in my quiet time. During this time, I read my daily Bible devotion, write in my Gratitude Journal, and pray. This quiet time helps me to start my day off refreshed and at peace.

You might choose to have your quiet time when your kids are napping, during your lunch hour at work, or in the evening when your kids go to bed. Schedule a quiet time that works for you. Whatever you choose to do during your quiet time, make sure that it refuels and refreshes your soul. You will be amazed at how much this time will make a difference in your overall health.
Staying healthy can often be a challenge for women. We are often too busy, overwhelmed, and plain exhausted to think about our health, but we must make it a priority in our lives. Our health is so important, and we must not take it for granted.
By making these simple changes in our lives, we can start our journey to better health and truly begin taking care of ourselves.
I challenge you this week to try at least one of these simple changes to improve your health. Once you have one change mastered, try another until you have completed all five. Believe me, you will start to feel better, have more energy, and become more motivated to live a healthier lifestyle. You can do this, one simple change at a time!
