When I first became a Christian, I knew prayer was something that God had commanded me to do as a new believer. It was my way to communicate with Him. I knew that prayer would nurture my personal relationship with God, but I didn’t truly understand the many other reasons why I NEEDED to pray daily.
If you really sit down and think about it, prayer is truly a supernatural phenomenon. When you pray, you are talking to the King of Kings, the Supreme Creator, and the Most Powerful Force in the Universe. It is intimidating and inconceivable at the same time, but God longs for us to have an intimate relationship with him.
“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will –“ Ephesians 1:4-5
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
There are so many verses in the bible that describe God’s love for us and supports the fact that he longs for a personal relationship with us. However, have you ever considered any other reasons why daily prayer is so important?
Giving Thanks and Praise
We need to thank God daily for the many blessings that he has given us. No matter what our circumstances may be, we can always praise God and thank him for his mercy, grace, and for loving us so much that he gave his only Son to save us. Showing our gratitude for His many blessings is another way that we can honor Him and show our love for Him.
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossians 4:2
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” Psalm 100:4
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6
Seeking God’s Will
We need to be seeking God’s will for our lives daily. He has a divine purpose for us, and we are called to serve Him. For myself, I struggle with this area in my prayer life. I truly want God’s will for my life, and I pray for it daily. However, I often get in the way of His will and the plans He has for me. Many times I try to control my future rather than consult with God. Needless to say, I am a slow learner and continue to thank God for His patience and mercy that He shows me every day.
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:26-28
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” 1 John 14
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21
Fighting Against Evil
We face a spiritual battle every day. You may not realize it, but the devil is trying to pull you away from God every chance he gets. The devil is scheming against you; ready to attack your family, emotions, and future. We need to be in prayer daily to fight against this enemy. Also, we need to be praying for God’s protection around us and our families. Finally, we need to be praying for God’s strength in our times of weakness. You see, God has already won this war. We just need to trust in Him and He will be with us always.
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
As Christians, we should all strive for a closer relationship with Our Heavenly Father. Daily prayer and reading God’s word will help us get there, but we also need to remember other important reasons why we need to be praying daily.
- Praising and thanking God for His infinite love, mercy, grace, and many blessings
- Praying for God’s will in our lives and for us to submit to His will and plans He has for us
- Praying for God’s protection and strength to fight the evil that surrounds us daily
